France - Portugal: Expert’s opinion

Here is a short analysis of the second semifinal from an expert: Rodrigo KENTON (CRC).

I thought the match was very even in the beginning. Little by little, however, France started to take control of the match because their outstanding players such as Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira began to get more and more involved. These players were also backed up by a strong defensive line, led by Lilian Thuram and William Gallas.

As France’s midfield began to shine, they really took control. I have to say that Frank Ribery did a tremendous job. In the first half of the match, he dictated the pace of the game at times, which is the hallmark of a very good player.

France had the better balance between the two teams. Portugal’s defensive line didn’t look too secure this evening. They were also found a little bit lacking in the middle of the park, preferring to use Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo on either flank to put in a lot of crosses. This did not trouble France, who coped with this approach comfortably. So, even though Portugal had the majority of possession and forced France quite deep at times, Raymond Domenech’s side never lost control.

Towards the end of the match, Portugal tried to force the pace and put pressure on France, but it was too little, too late. They were still trying to use the wings, when I think the middle of the park would have been the better option. The scoreline may not indicate a big difference between the two teams, but I think that France were not really troubled, which will come as a great source of frustration for Portugal.

For France, it will be great to be involved in the Final and it will be fitting for Zidane to bow out on such a high. He has been an inspiration to the team. He is a real leader for France and is constantly helping them to play as a team.
