Luis SUAREZ (ECU)
We’re very happy but we’re also very tired as it was a really physical game. The team did their job well towards the end of the match, they were confident and the second goal gave us breathing space. The players were very focused. We mustn’t get carried away, though, as this was just the first step. Fortunately, the players are aware of what remains to be done. I was afraid we would suffer on the physical side when Ivan Hurtado went off, so we slowed down the play and I made changes to rest certain players. I notice people criticise us for only ever winning at high altitude, but this stadium was more suited to Poland so now everyone knows we can win in other conditions. Nonetheless, we’ll have to be even more alert against Costa Rica.

Pawel JANAS (POL)
I don’t think I got the tactics wrong, everything depends on the performance and attitude of the players. We wanted to pounce on their mistakes, but the first goal spoiled all that. Now we have to take points off Germany and I’ll speak to the players about that on Saturday.

We can be happy with this victory, but we have to concentrate on our next game (against Costa Rica). We worked hard and this is the reward. We’ve taken a great step forward.

It was not an easy match, but we kept our heads ands now the game against Costa Rica is the most important in our history. You have to keep calm in big tournaments. We made a mistake and were punished for it. The first goal threw us and it reminded me a lot of Korea in 2002 (when Poland lost to the Korea Republic in their opening match) because after we conceded the first goal, we lost our focus, our communication and our organisation. Football is a game of mistakes and we were punished for ours. The second game against Germany is now a very hard task. They are the strongest team on paper in the group and are among the favourites to win the tournament. They have won their first game so they will be confident and more relaxed. For us, it will be a do-or-die game, so it could make things difficult. But sometimes in these situations you can gain strength and motivation. Hopefully we learn from our mistakes tonight.
