Interview: Mexico goalkeeper, Oswaldo Sanchez
Mexico’s goalkeeper is oe of the most experienced players of his team and he is expected to keep the goal closed. What does Oswaldo Sanchez think about their chances in this World Cup?
FIFAworldcup.com: Oswaldo, you are seen as one of the finest keepers in the world. Do you think you can confirm that status at the FIFA World Cup?
Oswaldo Sanchez: First of all, I feel honoured that people are saying such nice things about me. Naturally I want to perform well in Germany, but what matters to me more than anything else is that Mexico have a great World Cup.
How far do you think Mexico can go at Germany 2006?
We’ve got a terrific squad with some very high-quality players and we’re capable of anything. We really believe we can become world champions and we’re working towards that.
What makes you so sure of success?
Like I said, the quality of the players we have and the excellent atmosphere in the Mexican camp. We all get on very well and that’s very important if you want to achieve things.
Do you think Mexico will finally make it beyond the round of 16 this time?
Of course I do. We shouldn’t underestimate anyone, though. We’ve got some tough opponents in the first round, and we have to take each game as it comes. There’ll be plenty of time to think about the rest later.
A lot of people are pinning their hopes on this Mexico side.
Yes, we know that. I think a lot of that is down to our performances in the qualifiers and at the Confederations Cup last year. All we have to do now is give our fans a good World Cup.
Talking of the FIFA Confederations Cup, that trip was something of an introduction to German culture.
Yes, it was. The fact is I didn’t get out and about much because we were at our tournament base most of the time. I really liked what I saw, though, and I hope to see a little more this time around.
For those people who perhaps do not know you, what are Oswaldo Sanchez’s main qualities?
I’m a very hard worker, that’s all I can say really. I give it my all when I’m out on the pitch. As for the rest, well they’ll just have to judge me on what they see at the World Cup. I hope they like what they see.
