The German defense
While Michael Ballack, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski have grabbed all the headlines in the German press, the two central defenders have been the unsung heroes as they strive to give Klinsmann’s side the stability it requires.
Mertesacker has won more than 80 per cent of his one-on-one challenges in the tournament so far, the best record of any player at Germany 2006. He is also the embodiment of fair play, having picked up only one booking in 27 international appearances. However, the modest Hannover youngster is keen to stay out of the limelight, saying, “I’m happy to leave the media attention to others.”Metzelder was lavish in praise of his defensive partner, saying: “Per is a very talented player who has great positional instincts and aerial ability.” With his performances at the finals generating plaudits from almost every quarter, it could be only a matter of time before Mertesacker leaves Hannover for a club better equipped to satisfy his lofty ambitions.
