We’re just delighted we’ve picked up our first three points. It was a tremendous game, given that it was the opening match at the World Cup. Obviously we were going to see some nerves. We agreed we’d try and avoid yellow cards, and we succeeded in that. We wanted to put on a show for the fans, and that worked out well too. I was pleased at the way we recovered after conceding the goals. The mood in the dressing room is upbeat. We played at a high tempo, so you’ll always see a few passes going astray, but there were plenty of positives from the game. Philipp Lahm was tremendous, and so was Miroslav Klose on his birthday. This team has unbelievable energy.

It basically worked out the way I hoped it would. It’s always difficult at the start of a tournament, so I’m just delighted that we got off to a good start. We’ve only ourselves to blame for the two goals we conceded, because we tried to knock it about too much. We have to cut that out.

Philipp LAHM (GER)
There’s no way you can call that a perfect start, but we’ve given a decent account of ourselves. It’s good that we scored four goals, but we can’t go conceding as many as we did. If I’d known I was capable of scoring like that, I’d be doing it in every game! It’s vital to start with a win. The victory was partly down to the crowd, they got right behind us from the start.
