France’s unwanted record
France hasn’t scored in a World Cup outside France since 1986. That’s right, 20 years ago.
If Manuel Amoros is near a television tonight the chances are the former France defender will be watching his country’s FIFA World Cup™ game with Korea Republic and wondering if his record which has stood for 20 years will last a little longer.
The defender, who represented his country in both the 1982 and 1986 tournaments, is the last player to score for France in a FIFA World Cup game outside their own borders. His goal came from the penalty spot in the 111th minute of the match for third place against Belgium in Puebla, Mexico, on 28 June 1986.
It was the winning goal as France won 4-2 to finish the Mexico tournament in style and it was his one and only strike for his country. Maybe he should pass on some advice to Thierry Henry and Co before Sunday’s game in Leipzig.
