France, favourites?
All of a sudden, though at the start of the competition, everybody would have said they are finished, France is now the favourite to win the World Cup.
Having overcome Brazil in the quarter-finals, France have suddenly been installed as many people’s favourites for the world crown. But mindful of their past difficulty shouldering such a burden, Les Bleus are at pains to deflect this unwanted extra pressure as they try to chart a safe course through the tournament.
“The Brazil game is ancient history now. If we’re going to reach the Final, it’s vital that we forget that match and retain the humility that has been our great strength so far. Portugal will be much harder to beat than Brazil. I’m expecting a really tough game.” So speaks the vastly experienced Lilian Thuram, categorically shunning the favourites’ tag that everyone is trying to pin on France.
