Domenech defends French players

France won a 1-0 victory over Mexico, but the players were booed when they were playing. All, with the exception of Zidane, who played his 100th game for France.

France coach Raymond Domenech has launched a withering attack on a French television programme which he claimed unfairly depicted his squad as aloof and distant.

He said that there is no way he would forbid players to get in contact with fans, like it was implied in that TF1 documentary.

“I can’t let that pass - it was presented as if we were holed up in a bunker,” stormed Domenech.

“As if we’d forbid the players to be approached by the public. It’s wrong.

“The players have always respected the fans. It’s absolutely scandalous to portray things like that,” he added.

French football chief Jean-Pierre Escalettes also sought to take the heat off the team.

“The team is concentrating. The leitmotiv is total concentration,’ said the president of the French Football Federation.

“They don’t want to repeat the mistakes of previous years. When 5,000 fans want autographs, they can’t all go away with signed shirts.”

France have two more friendlies - against Denmark and China - before their opening FIFA World Cup match against Switzerland on 13 June.
