Own goal record
The own goal scored by Gamarra in the England vd. Paraguay match holds an unwanted record for the Paraguayan defender:
Carlos Gamarra’s misplaced header against England yesterday, , timed at three minutes, was the quickest own goal in FIFA World Cup™ history.
The previous fastest was scored by Yugoslavia’s Ivan Horvat, who netted an own goal in the 9th minute against Germany FR in 1954.
The first ever FIFA World Cup own goal was scored by Switzerland’s Ernst Loertscher v Germany in 1938 while only one game in FIFA World Cup history has featured two own goals – the clash between Portugal and USA on 5 June 2002 with Jorge Costa and Jeff Agoos the luckless pair.
