Owen’s injury, England’s worry
Her comes one (Rooney) and goes out another (Owen). Not sure yet, but Michael Owen’s injury might create some problems for England.
The 26-year-old striker twisted his right knee as he attempted to provide a pass to Ashley Cole. He was attended to on the touchline by members of England’s medical team before heading to the dressing room.
Ice was applied to the joint and it was reported that a brace was also applied to his injured leg. According to the English Football Association, Owen will have a scan in Cologne on Wednesday morning.
England captain David Beckham said: “I think it’s a bad one. We are going to have to wait to see what the doctors say. It’s sad, Michael’s one of those players you need in big tournaments. It’s unfortunate for him and for us.”
The initial prognosis from coach Sven-Goran Eriksson did not sound too promising. “Maybe he’s out of the tournament, I’m not sure. It doesn’t look good,” he told reporters.
Owen returned to action a month ago after breaking his foot on 31 December playing for Newcastle against Tottenham Hotspur. He was substituted in England’s opening two FIFA World Cup games, having appeared to be struggling for fitness.
