Interview: England’s Pete Tong
Pete Tong, a world-wide recognizable British DJ, speaks about his emotions during the World Cup and especially about the game Portugal - England.
Can you describe us your emotions after the Portugal-England game?
I feel very flat, very low, very sad. I mean, everyone gets so excited, it just holds everybody, takes you to a different place when the competition is on, and then suddenly it’s gone. England are out and we’ve been let down again. I think the worst thing is that they didn’t really play that well. They didn’t play that well until they had somebody sent off, and then their backs were against the wall. It’s just a huge disappointment. Are you disappointed more about today’s match or about England’s performances during the whole competition?
Well, how we played during the whole tournament. I mean we were getting through, we won our group and we got to the last 16, but we never really turned it on. I’ve got great memories of past tournaments, when there were great moments. When we went out of the last couple of tournaments, I think we were beaten by Brazil in 2002 and by Portugal, a good Portugal side, a couple of years ago at the European Championships. But we just didn’t get going in this World Cup. The players just didn’t really give us what we see them give us every week in the Premiership and in the Champions League.Where did you watch the match?
At home. I had been in Ibiza DJ-ing, I was at Pacha at 8 in the morning. But I came out of there, jumped on a plane and watched it in London.Have you seen any other matches at the 2006 FIFA World Cup?
I did get out to Germany. I went to the England-Paraguay game at the Frankfurt stadium, where Brazil are just about to play. It was fantastic. It’s a great country to hold it in. The Germans are great hosts, I have to say. It’s been really, really well organised. They have some great stadiums and everybody who has been to a game in a different city says the same. Certainly, big congratulations go to Germany for running a great tournament.Who has been your favourite player in this tournament?
It’s hard to say really. I was surprised Argentina went out because they were looking so good. I really like the look of Messi, even though he didn’t play very much. Overall, I just couldn’t believe they lost.
So, you have to look at the Germans. Ballack looks very strong. Klose looks like a good player. I’m very pleased for Jens Lehmann, after all of the fighting for his place against Oliver Kahn, he got in the side and did really well. I’m an Arsenal man, so I was pleased for him.Activity

Greatest match ever seen
The drama when Arsenal did the double, and Michael Thomas scored in the final seconds at Anfield against Liverpool to win the title. The season we went unbeaten a few years ago was also unbelievable.First FIFA World Cup you have followed
I wasn’t really that aware of what was going on in 1966, but in 1970, I was really up for that one. Brazil won and played amazingly. That Brazilian side with Jairzinho and Rivelino - that was when the World Cup really got me.The FIFA World Cup match you would have most liked to play in
When Brazil won in 1970 – that would have been amazing. For England, the semi-final we lost in 1990. Bobby Robson was our manager and we went out to Germany on penalties.Prediction for this tournament
I think Germany might win.Your website
