England - Portugal: Players’ reactions
Enbgland left home again without winning anything, while Portugal have qualified to the final 4 for the first time in 40 years.

Football is a tough sport, we were so close and could have won the game. Ricardo did very well – great penalty saves are one of his specialities, but we hit the target and that’s all you can ask for. It’s just a shame we couldn’t have decided it earlier. We played with ten men for a lot of the game, but they rarely created much and we could have scored with the half-chances we created. The sending-off had a massive effect on the game. I felt the referee could have blown for a foul on Wayne (Rooney) earlier as it was two against one. It was a pivotal moment for us as Wayne is crucial for us, one of the best individuals I’ve ever seen.RICARDO (POR)
Penalties are always something different from the rest of the game. When you miss two penalties, normally you lose but we were lucky today. I have to say I am not the hero – it is the team. Playing against Brazil in the semi-final would be the biggest moment of my career.Cristiano RONALDO (POR)
I felt very confident before I took the penalty and I hit it well and scored a great penalty. I am very happy. The first half I felt very good but in the second half I felt my thigh tighten. But the team played very well. Can we win the Cup? Everything is possible in football.Luis FIGO (POR)
It was a very difficult game for us but the team kept going until the last minute. Penalties are a lottery and England missed out today - we were the ones who had the luck. I had to go off as I had a problem with my left foot. It was very difficult for me to watch from the bench without being able to do anything.Hugo VIANA (POR)
England played very well but penalties are a lottery. Anything can happen - we missed two but we won the game. We have a dream but we have to keep our feet on the floor as we have not won anything yet. We will have a tough game on Wednesday.Gary NEVILLE (ENG)
Until Ronaldo took that penalty I never had a negative thought about the outcome of the match and I don’t think anyone did. We are devastated tonight because we believed we had a great chance. We’d got through quite comfortably to the quarter-finals and we had a chance to go and beat Portugal. I think we had the best three or four chances in the match and we had to take one of them and we didn’t. Even after (Wayne) Rooney got sent off we had one or two chances. People will talk about the sending-off but if you are going to win a tournament you have to get over obstacles like that.Frank LAMPARD (ENG)
Considering we played with ten men I thought we were the better team in terms of our work rate. I didn’t see the incident with Wayne, I don’t know what happened but I was surprised to see the red card come out. We worked so hard, we covered lots of ground and still created the occasional chance. Considering how hard we’ve worked in the last few weeks, it is hard to be out now.Ashley COLE (ENG)
We’ve practised penalties after every session, but it’s a different atmosphere when it’s not training. You can’t blame the penalty takers – it takes guts to go out and take one. You’ve got to say well done to Ricardo for going the right way. We can’t blame the fact that Wayne got a red card. He’s very down at the moment but all the lads supported him. It was down to us ten to finish the job but we couldn’t do it.
