England-Ecuador: Players’ reactions

England got through after a game in which they really didn’t impress. Unfortunately, Lampard doesn’t seem to be the player he is at Chelsea and it shows in the game of his team.

John TERRY (ENG), Budweiser Man of the Match
Becks (David Beckham) was practising in training and it was a wonderful shot - that shows his talent at free-kicks. We worked very hard and it was a hard match. We had some difficulties in the first half and it was very hot but when we got the goal, it was great for us. We are confident about the next match.

David BECKHAM (ENG)
We are happy. We did our job and it doesn’t matter if we play against Portugal or the Netherlands in the quarter-final. Today we haven’t shown our full potential.

Wayne ROONEY (ENG)
We know that we are not far away from the Final, but I think this is where the competition gets really tough and we will have to be at our very best. We’ve had four games with three wins and a draw and I don’t think the performances have been too bad. I think it’s been alright and we have got the results we needed.

Frank LAMPARD (ENG)
I think the system worked and it was important to have an extra man in the middle of the field. Nevertheless we didn’t stretch them enough in the first half. In the second half it was better because we put them under more pressure. The big teams are determined to win the World Cup, but you have to play very hard to win it.

Rio FERDINAND (ENG)
Everyone can see there are ups and downs. We created enough chances to win the game.

Ashley COLE (ENG)
We trained hard and the system worked. I’m 100 per cent fit and I’m feeling good. Our defence played better than against Sweden.

Joe COLE (ENG)
We should have got more goals in the second half. We can pack our bags tomorrow if we don’t pay attention and for me personally it was a tough match playing in this position.

Paul ROBINSON (ENG)
We were very pleased with the result. The victory was a struggle. I wouldn’t say we were particularly pleased with how we played.

Steven GERRARD (ENG)
We are in the last eight and we passed the ball a lot better in the second half.

Owen HARGREAVES (ENG)
We won 1-0 so we did the better job and we had quite a few chances to score.

Michael CARRICK (ENG)
I feel comfortable with the different system we played. It makes us more dangerous. Now we’ve got a few days’ rest and then we will prepare for the next game. I’m enjoying the whole tournament and being part of it.

Luis VALENCIA (ECU)
We gave our all on the pitch and I’m happy with the work of all the team. We had a little bit of bad luck today. I think that England could play more offensively.

Agustin DELGADO (ECU)
We showed to the world today that Ecuador have a very good team. We worked step by step in this World Cup but I’m very sad because this is our last game. We were happy here and we enjoyed it.

Giovanny ESPINOZA (ECU)
We can hold our heads up high because we’ve proved we can play good football. On a personal level, I’ve learned a lot at this tournament.

Ivan KAVIEDES (ECU)
Before we came here, the press in Ecuador and elsewhere wrote off our chances. Now I’m sure they’ll have an inquest into what happened and why we’re out.

Ivan HURTADO (ECU)
I feel very privileged to have experienced all this. We’re a little sad to be going home but we can hold our heads up high when we get there. Now we’ve got to make sure we qualify for South Africa 2010. European teams don’t improvise much. They play a simple, direct game, but they don’t take any risks.

Carlos TENORIO (ECU)
We weren’t quite up to standard and we weren’t able to go raise our game. I’m happy though, and it doesn’t get any bigger than this for a player. If that shot in the first half hadn’t hit the crossbar, it might have been different, but it’s just a question of luck.
