Beckham scored in three World Cups
The free kick he scored against Ecuador makes David Beckham the only English player in history to score in 3 World Cups.
He scored once at France 98 (v Colombia – another direct free-kick) and once at Korea/Japan 02 (v Argentina – penalty).
While Gary Lineker is comfortably England’s record scorer in FIFA World Cups with ten goals – Geoff Hurst is next best on five – they all came in two editions, 1986 and 1990.
Michael Owen was hoping to strike at his third FIFA World Cup tournament (two in 1998 and two in 2002) but a serious knee injury picked up in the final group game against Sweden ended his involvement in the Germany showpiece.
