Interview: Costa Rica’s Gomez
Wanchope’s fellow striker, Paulo Gomez, talks about the chances they might still have.
FIFAworldcup.com: Ronald, Costa Rica created several chances against Germany, and until late on you were only a goal down. How did you feel after the game?
Ronald Gomez: Obviously, we were very disappointed. We know we played well against Germany and that we were very close to pulling off a draw. We came away empty handed, though, and that hurt. I though the final scoreline flattered them a little to be honest.
What areas do you need to improve on?
We’ve got to gamble a little more. The midfielders have to push forward and get into the opposition box more. Paulo (Wanchope) and I can’t take on defences on our own. The fact is, though, that we scored twice against the Germans. We capitalised on the fact that they don’t have a very good defence and we need to be just as effective against Ecuador. How will you put that into practice?
By working hard. I’m convinced we’re going to up our game. We’re going to attack more against Ecuador, our midfield men will get forward more and we’ll get a good result. What are your hopes for qualifying based on?
Winning games, as simple as that. We’ve watched them a lot and we know we’re just as good as they are. If we get things right we can keep our hopes alive. I reckon our performance against the Germans was as well as we’ve played in a while. You are a big admirer of Ronaldo and Adriano, two players with their sights set high in this tournaments. What objectives have you set yourself?
They are both very important and highly talented strikers, two among many in this tournament. As for me, well I’ve got a lot of self-confidence, and I’m aiming to score a goal in each of the two games we have left against Ecuador and Poland and help us qualify for the next round.
