Costa Rica never lost opening game
This is bad news for the German fans. It seems that Costa Rica never lost their opening match in the World Cup. Combined with the fact that Germany doesn’t play their best football, this looks bad.
Costa Rica won both their opening matches at previous FIFA World Cup finals without conceding a goal. In 1990, they won 1-0 v Scotland and in 2002, they defeated China 2-0. On both occasions Costa Rica were drawn in Group C and scored all 3 goals in the second half.
CONCACAF teams have failed to win any of their five previous FIFA World Cup opening matches, notching up one draw and four defeats to date. : France-Mexico in 1930 (4-1), Italy-USA in 1934 (7-1), Brazil-Mexico in 1950 (4-0), Sweden-Mexico in 1958 (3-0), Mexico-Soviet Union in 1970 (0-0).
Costa Rica have a positive record when it comes to playing European teams in the FIFA World Cup. In four matches, they have won 2, drawn 1 and lost 1. In FIFA World Cup group matches however Costa Rica remain unbeaten against European opposition.
