Ronaldo is the third scorer for Brazil ever
Though criticized a lot for his overweight problems, it seems that Ronaldo doesn’t mind at all.
He became the third ever Brazil goalscorer against FC Lucerne, scoring a total of 69 goals in his matches in the yellow shirt.
The landmark was achieved on Tuesday in the Auriverde’s 8-0 rout of Lucerne, the latest in Brazil’s warm-up matches for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™. After more than 50 days out of competitive action due to back problems, Ronaldo hit a well-taken brace of goals to take his total to 69 in all matches in the famous yellow jersey, an eloquent response to the recent wave of criticism. In the process the powerful front man moved two goals ahead of Canarinha legend Zico, also set to appear in Germany as coach of Brazil’s Group F rivals Japan.
Another record, that is more tangible that the 95 goals Pele scored for Brazil in his career is the World Cup record of 14 goals, scored by Germany’s Gerd Muller.
However, Ronaldo can have more realistic hopes of breaking another long-standing record come the FIFA World Cup. The 12 goals he has scored in the tournament to date leave him just two short of German hitman Gerd Muller’s record of 14. Yet another target to aim at for a man who has picked up two FIFA World Cup winner’s medals from his last three tournaments (USA 94, France 98 and Korea/Japan 2002).
