Fifa World Cup qualifying groups and matches - part 2
This is the second part of the analysis on the last qualifying matches to World Cup 2006. If you missed the first part, you can read it here.
Europe
Group 5:
Italy needs one more point to be qualified from the first spot. They have 5 points ahead of Norway and Slovenia, teams that still fight for the second spot, that will enable either of them to play in the play-offs. Those two teams both have 12 points and two more games to play.
Group 6:
England needs to beat both Austria and Poland in their final two games to clinch the first spot. Still, they might be able to qualify directly to the World Cup being in the top 2 second places. Anyway, both Poland and England have a chance to be present in Germany in 2006, without playing another play-off match.
Group 7:
Spain is always a big contender for winning the World Cup. Somehow, yet, they never do. They even finish their World Cup road quite early, not reaching the final 4 or even final 8.
Spain has to win both matches and Serbia and Montenegro should not win at least in one of their final two matches in order for Spain to finish on top of group 7.
Group 8:
Sweden and Croatia battle for the first spot, with a one point difference between them. Anyway, they might both qualify directly to Germany, since the team that finishes second might qualify directly from being one of the top 2 second finishers.
