Warning: red cards coming

FIFA told referees to be ready to take more red cards out of their pockets.

It seems like FIFA doesn’t want any reckless moves on the field.

Referees at the World Cup will eject players who elbow or tackle recklessly. A meeting of the governing body’s International Football Association Board also approved yellow cards for shirt-pulling or holding an opponent, as well as for playing the ball after the referee’s whistle.

I have to say I agree with this, especially after seeing the horrific tackle performed by Asier del Horno on Messi in the Chelsea - Barcelona. Maybe the Argentinian player acted a little, but the entry was horrific, nevertheless.

So, will it be a cleaner World Cup?

Surely, FIFA hopes so:

“The stars of the tournament will serve as role models for hundreds of millions of other players around the world,” FIFA president Sepp Blatter said. “So it is all the more important that Germany 2006 sets a positive example.”
