Strikers of the World Cup: Lampard and Klose
Who shot the most shots at the goal? Who missed less and who missed more?
The performances of England midfielder Frank Lampard have been a focus of attention for English newspapers since the FIFA World Cup™ began but in terms of positive approach and willingness to get shots on goal he is beyond reproach.
After the group stage, the Chelsea player led the way in respect of shots – 18 in his three appearances. However he has still to get on the scoresheet and of all those attempts only eight landed on target. Miroslav Klose has proved much more effective with fewer attempts on goal (13). Nine were on target and resulted in the four goals with which Germany’s number 11 leads the race for the adidas Golden Shoe.
Dirk Kuyt’s statistics are also interesting, showing that he had only six shots in the 202 minutes he was on the field of play for Netherlands. All six landed on target but he failed to score.
Ironically Ruud van Nistelrooij, the player Kuyt replaced for the game against Portugal in which the Dutch exited the competition, also shows that same consistency with all his shots landing on target. However the fact that he totalled only four attempts in his 195 minutes of action with one goal scored, perhaps explains why Marco van Basten chose to make the change against Portugal.
