SoccerMania: Mexico vs. Bulgaria

I like football (or soccer). Do not forget I am European so, I talk about it as football. Nevertheless, I came across this article in Houston Chronicle that really pointed out the difference between this sport and any other sport in the world right now.

When it comes to worldwide sporting events, none is as big a party as the World Cup.

No disrespect, but when the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball crown a champion they call them “world champions,” yet the rest of the world does not play American football, basketball or baseball on a scale anywhere near that of soccer.

It’s that global appeal and history that makes soccer fans so feverish about their sport. It’s also the anticipation — a four-year wait for the World Cup — that makes it even more important in the eyes of the world.

While I watch basketball and american football (as we call it) every time I have the chance, I have to agree with the author of the article (which is American, I think, or at least writing for an American newspaper): there is nothing like the Fifa World Cup.

More news, if you, American soccer fans, want to get a glimpse of a team who will play in the World Cup, find out that Mexico (a team that it is supposed to be one of the surprises on next year’s World Cup) will take on Bulgaria on Nov. 16, in Houston.
