Match-fixing scandal in Germany
Months before the start of World Cup in Germany, it seems the plague of match-fixing has reached the country.
Four people were arrested in Germany’s latest game-fixing scandal, with soccer authorities promising to resolve the case before the country hosts the World Cup.
Tough. But, compared to the latest match-fixing scandal in Germany, referees weren’t involved. More, the scandal doesn’t regard first division matches.
In November, a Berlin court gave six men — including two referees and a former player — jail time or suspended sentences for fixing 23 games in 2004. Betting profits topped $2.3 million in Germany’s worst soccer scandal in 40 years.
Many of Europe’s soccer leagues from the Netherlands to the Czech Republic have been hit by game-fixing scandals in the past year.
Hopefully, the players at the World Cup will be greatful they had been chosen to represent their respective countries and we will not have any similar scandal there.
