Klose leads goalscorer chart
Germany’s Klose has now 4 goals scored at the World Cup, one goal more than Spain’s Torres, but in 3 games (2 for Torres). Hopefully they will keep scoring so we could see a World Cup goalgetter that scores more than 7 goals, finally.
Klose’s two goals in the hosts’ 3-0 victory over Ecuador took his tally at Germany 2006 to four and bore the mark of a striker brimming with self-belief. The way he stroked a low shot into the far corner for his first goal in the fourth minute even carried echoes of the great Gerd Muller’s winning strike in the 1974 Final against the Dutch.
No-one has scored more FIFA World Cup goals than Muller’s 14 but Klose now has nine to his name – and if German fans have their wish he will get another four games in which to add to that tally. Certainly, the way he rounded Ecuador goalkeeper Cristian Mora for his second goal after 44 minutes suggested he had absolutely no doubt in his mind that he was going to score from the moment Michael Ballack lifted a cute lob into his path.
Little wonder his coach Jurgen Klinsmann sang the striker’s praises afterwards. “Miroslav Klose is currently showing exactly what he’s made of,” said Klinsmann, a man who knows all about getting goals on the biggest stage. “The World Cup is a chance to stand out from the crowd and to step up to the next level. He’s in his prime, and is unbelievably hungry for goals. We’re all hoping that he’ll get on a roll and carry us through the tournament.”
