Interview: Superman Brandon Routh
Brandon Routh, the new Superman, wished he was at the final and at the World Cup. Whould would have known Superman likes soccer?
Can you tell us about your soccer background?
I began playing soccer at age six and continued playing through high school. I played for both my high school team and with club teams. I’ve played a season of indoor as well. I played some pick-up games in college and also when I moved to Los Angeles. It has been my favourite sport to play since I began. Before high school I switched from forward to sweeper. While in high school I played mostly right midfield. I really began to enjoy throw-ins and corner-kicks because of the potential for setting up goals.Do you have a favourite team or player?
My favourite team is the US team of course! I really like Brian McBride because he’s been with the team a while and played very well and with great heart in all the World Cup games.Do you have any particular memories of previous World Cups?
I remember watching the first US game when they played in the US in the 1994 World Cup. I was lying in front of my grandmother’s television with my entire family. What are your thoughts of this World Cup?
Well it’s been challenging to sit down and watch a complete game because I’ve been so busy promoting the film Superman Returns. But I did get to watch the USA games and I think they played well, with the exception of the Czech game. I am proud of them and I know they gained great experience which will pay off in four years. There have been some pretty exciting overtimes and PK sessions! It’s been a pretty lively Cup.What was the first FIFA World Cup you followed? Do you have any heroes from past tournaments?
I’ve followed three World Cups now. My idol in the history of the tournament is Pele. From an early age playing soccer, he was probably the only name I really knew. So his legend has definitely made an impact on American soccer culture. What is the FIFA World Cup match you would have liked to see or play in?
Wow! I would like to see and play in any, really. However since I’m partial to the US team I would like to play for them. I guess if there was one game this World Cup, I would’ve picked USA v Italy. I’ve watched some Italian soccer and they play extremely well. That would be absolutely amazing to step on the field. What amazing energy and excitement there must be. It gives me chills just imagining it!What was the last Germany 2006 match you saw?
The last game I was able to watch all of was the US loss to Ghana. I was screaming and yelling because they were so close to scoring so many times. But it was awfully hard for them since they were down a man for much of the game. What’s your pick for the Final?
Italy v France - that is incredibly hard to pick. I think we might have a 1-1 score and go into OT. Beyond that I will let the players decide on the field. All I know for sure is that I’d love to be there to see it happen!Your website?
