FIFA not happy with World Cup ticket selling

FIFA might take control of selling tickets starting with World Cup 2010.

Blatter said in an interview published Sunday it would have been better if soccer’s world governing body had organized ticket sales for the 2006 World Cup, rather than host country Germany, after criticizing strict German controls.

“It would probably have been better if we had taken over the ticket sales. The Germans have chosen a system that I don’t understand at all,” Blatter told the weekly NZZ am Sonntag.

The issue at hand is, of course, the real reason. Is really the bad management the real reason for taking control? Or the fact the ticket selling would probably bring a great profit for FIFA.

World Cup became the major sporting event of the planet (sorry, US readers, but Super Bowl is only the major event in the USA). The request for tickets is now bigger than ever, with countries from all over the world taking part. While there may be errors from the German side, I have to remember that FIFA cancelled the Opening Gala because it seemed too expensive.

Nevertheless, let’s hope the World Cup in 2010 will not be seen as a meaning of getting FIFA rich, but a way for all of us to enjoy class-act football.
