Australia to content at World Cup, says Kewell
Though a week ago they were almost out of the World Cup and they almost didn’t get there, it seems that Kewell thinks the Australian team might be the team to surprise at World Cup.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph before heading back to his English Premier League club Liverpool, Kewell said he and his teammates are not satisfied with just qualifying for the showpiece tournament.
“This is hopefully only the beginning of the adventure,” Kewell said before pointing to South Korea making the semi-finals in 2002 and Greece winning last year’s European Championships. “We’re not going to Germany just to be one of the lightweights.”
Unfortunately, none of the teams above said BEFORE the tournament that they will be surprises. They just were. More, almost all the teams that announced before any tournament that they will be the surprise failed miserably.
So, in the short run, let’s wait for the group matches and talk about surprises from there on.
While Kewell has some points to make (like having new young players and having Gus Hiddink as coach, along with the experience of the older players) and I agree with all of them, I don’t think that only those points will make you a contender in the World Cup.
